Android Studio Otter 2 Feature Drop: Boost Your Productivity
Android Studio Otter 2 Feature Drop is stable, boosting productivity with enhanced Agent Mode (Gemini 3, Android Knowledge Base), Backup & Sync, and IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2 updates.
The Android Studio Otter 2 Feature Drop has reached stable release, designed to significantly boost developer productivity. This update brings powerful enhancements to Agent Mode, including integration with the new Android Knowledge Base for improved accuracy and the option to leverage the new Gemini 3 model. Developers can also look forward to new settings like the ability to maintain a consistent personalized IDE environment across multiple machines. Furthermore, this release incorporates the latest stability and performance improvements from the IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2 platform, featuring Kotlin compiler and terminal enhancements, making it a substantial upgrade for your development workflow.

Updates to Agent Mode
Access to Gemini 3 We've integrated the Gemini 3 Pro Preview model into Android Studio, our most advanced model for coding and agentic capabilities. This offers superior performance within Agent Mode and enhanced problem-solving, allowing you to concentrate on creating high-quality apps.
Limited Gemini 3 access (with a 1 million token size window) is currently rolling out to developers using the no-cost default model. For higher usage rates and longer sessions, a paid Gemini API Key or a Gemini Code Assist Enterprise plan can be used.
Enhance Agent Mode with Android Knowledge While large language models offer broad knowledge, their training data has a fixed cut-off, leading to potential gaps for new libraries and updated best practices, especially for niche APIs. To address this, Android Studio's Agent Mode now includes the Android Knowledge Base. This new feature significantly improves accuracy and reduces "hallucinations" by grounding responses with authoritative documentation. Instead of solely relying on its training data, the agent can consult fresh, official sources like Android developer docs, Firebase, Google Developers, and Kotlin docs before providing answers.
The Android Knowledge Base content is stored locally within Android Studio and updates automatically in the background, ensuring its availability regardless of the LLM you use for AI assistance.

This feature activates automatically when Agent Mode detects a need for additional context, displaying explanatory text. To encourage more frequent documentation references, you can add a line like "Refer to Android documentation for guidance" to your Rules configuration.
Requested Settings Updates
Backup and Sync Backup and Sync offers a new method to maintain a consistent personalized Android Studio environment across all your installations. You can now back up your settings—including keymaps, Code Editor preferences, and system settings—to cloud storage via your Google Account, ensuring a seamless experience wherever you code. This feature also supports JetBrains accounts for developers using both IntelliJ and Android Studio simultaneously.

Getting started is easy: simply sign into your Google Account by clicking the avatar in the top-right corner of the IDE, or navigate to Settings > Backup and Sync. After authorizing Android Studio access to your account's storage, you control which data categories to sync. When syncing for the first time on a new machine, you'll be prompted to either download existing remote settings or upload your current local settings. Backup and Sync can be disabled at any time from the settings menu. This feature has been available since the first Android Studio Otter release.
Communications from Android Studio You can now opt-in to receive direct communications from the Android Studio team. This allows you to get emails and notifications about critical product updates, new features, and new libraries as soon as they become available.
This option will appear when you sign in, and your preference can be changed anytime via Settings > Tools > Google Accounts > Communications.

IntelliJ Merge Updates
This release integrates all stability and quality improvements from the IntelliJ IDEA 2025.2 platform. Key highlights include:
- Kotlin K2 Mode: Following its rapid adoption, the K2 Kotlin mode is now more stable and performant. This version enhances Kotlin code analysis stability, introduces new inspections, and improves the reliability of Kotlin script execution.
- Terminal Performance: The integrated terminal offers significantly faster rendering. For Bash and Zsh, this update also brings minor visual refinements without altering core shell behavior.
