Convex Secures $24M Funding to Accelerate Backend Reinvention

We are thrilled to announce that Convex has successfully raised $24 million in funding to further our mission of reinventing backend platforms for modern development teams. This significant round was spearheaded by a16z, co-led by Spark Capital, and saw participation from Neo Ventures, Alumni Ventures, and Upscalers. Additionally, a distinguished group of angel investors, including Adam D'Angelo, Drew Houston, and Theo Browne, joined the round.

With this substantial capital infusion, our immediate focus is clear:

Hiring Exceptional Talent

Achieving Convex's full potential requires significant effort, and we are actively seeking talented individuals to join our growing team. The demand for our platform is skyrocketing:

Our Growth Story: Customers Thrive, So Do We

Over the past nine months, Convex has experienced explosive growth, with our customer base, project count, and revenue expanding by more than tenfold. We've witnessed startups evolve from college hackathon projects to generating tens of thousands in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) on our platform, building businesses that now earn millions annually. We've supported them from day one, and their Convex codebases now feature thousands of backend functions.

Furthermore, we currently have dozens of companies on our Enterprise plan waitlist. These organizations have developed successful proof-of-concepts over the last 9-18 months and are prepared to make a substantial commitment to Convex. However, they require immense scale, enhanced compliance, data sovereignty, streamlined public cloud procurement, robust Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and dedicated forward-deployed engineering support.

To meet these advanced needs and serve as the robust foundation for larger projects and enterprises, we urgently need exceptional professionals to help us scale, innovate, and ensure the reliability of our platform.

Our growth trajectory continues "up and to the right."

Exciting New Features on the Horizon

Several transformative features are in active development:

  • Convex Components: These are central to the platform's future. We are making them faster and easier to build, fostering an open ecosystem for collaboration. Our vision is to evolve them into a true marketplace, empowering individual developers to launch businesses based on Convex components.
  • Integrated OLAP Support: While Convex excels at transactional workloads, ad-hoc analysis has been a challenge. We are integrating native support for Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), enabling developers to build aggregates, dashboards, and perform exploratory queries without needing external data warehouses.
  • Local-First Sync: Developers desire instant, automatic, and optimistic local interaction with their application data. We plan to ship a "Convex-flavored" local-first solution, designed to be as intuitive and ergonomic as the rest of our product.

We pride ourselves on Convex's Developer Experience (DX), but we know this is just the beginning. If you're passionate about making developers happier and more productive, we invite you to join our team.

Customer testimonials, like one shared on November 6, 2025, highlight Convex's impact: "Insane just how much @convex_dev has made it fun to make things for me for link. Never really dove much into it before but now, I have a reactive & collaborative markdown editor and it took me maybe an hour to get the actual thing working." This demonstrates the platform's ability to facilitate rapid and enjoyable development.

Building a Durable, Generational, and Profitable Business

We're fortunate to see the conversation around Convex evolve over time:

  • 2023: "What is Convex?"
  • 2024: "Is Convex any good?"
  • 2025: "Is it safe to build on Convex?"

As we serve as the foundational backend for projects and businesses, we are committed to continually earning and reinforcing the trust placed in us. We are candid about common concerns, which I discuss with customers daily:

  • Security & Longevity: "What if Convex shuts down?" Some worry that future venture capital challenges might force us to sell or discontinue the cloud service.
  • Pricing Fairness: "What if you dramatically increase prices?" Others fear we might leverage high switching costs to implement unsustainable pricing in the future.

To proactively address these concerns, we are developing a scalable version of our open-source, self-hosted edition. This will provide a viable alternative to our cloud service for customers who require it. Furthermore, we need infrastructure experts to optimize our systems for cost-efficiency, ensuring positive cash flow. This financial independence allows us to control our destiny and uphold all our promises to customers.

Technical excellence underpins this commitment. As an example, a July 24, 2025, post from James Cowling highlighted how switching to a treap-based data structure significantly reduced subscription worker CPU and latency on one of Convex's highest subscription-count projects.

Seeking the Best Technologists in the Industry

We are not merely re-selling existing technologies like Postgres; we are striving to create something both novel and foundational simultaneously, a challenging but rewarding endeavor. Since our early days, our team page has featured this bold mission statement:

Convex’s mission is to fundamentally change how software is built on the Internet and who gets to build it.

Admittedly, this sounded ambitious, even "insane," when we were just three people with no users and only a prototype. It still feels audacious, but the progress we've made speaks volumes.

We invite you to apply and join our journey.
