It’s how they gain practical experience, connect with fellow developers, and begin constructing the essential foundation for their careers. As someone who has interviewed numerous developers, I don't prioritize the sheer number of pull requests you've made. What truly matters to me is what they demonstrate.

One thoughtful, meticulously crafted contribution reveals several key qualities:

• You possess a clear understanding of the project's context.
• You respect guidelines and openly embrace feedback.
• You engage professionally in review processes.
• You exhibit a genuine care for the craft of software development.

While AI tools can be invaluable assistants, your unique thought process, inherent curiosity, and distinct voice are what truly make your work stand out. Don't misunderstand, AI is an immense help and can even write code more efficiently than some experienced engineers. However, it's crucial to ensure you fundamentally understand what it's doing.

These are the attributes that employers genuinely notice.

Your GitHub Is Your Portfolio

Don't merely treat GitHub as a storage solution; it is unequivocally your professional portfolio. Curate it with that mindset.

Ensure you add your open source contributions to your resume or LinkedIn profile. Be specific and quantifiable:
