Google's AI 'vibe-coding' tool, Opal, is now integrated into the Gemini web app. Users can create custom AI-powered 'Gems' using natural language prompts and a visual editor, simplifying app development.

Google has integrated its "vibe-coding" tool, Opal, into the Gemini web app, enabling users to create AI-powered mini-applications called "Gems." Introduced in 2024, Gems are personalized versions of Gemini designed for specific tasks or scenarios, such as a learning coach, a brainstorming assistant, a career guide, a coding partner, or an editor.

Opal facilitates the creation or mixing of these mini-apps. Users simply describe their desired application in natural language, and Opal leverages various Gemini models to build it. Now accessible directly within the Gemini web app's Gems manager, Opal features a visual editor. This editor allows users to intuitively arrange and link application steps without writing any code.

A new view within Gemini's visual editor can also convert written prompts into a clear list of steps, simplifying the app development process and enhancing clarity. For more advanced customization, users can transition from Gemini to the Advanced Editor at opal.google.com. These custom mini-apps can be saved and reused.

The concept of "vibe-coding"—using AI for programming and app development—has seen a surge in popularity. This market now includes offerings from startups like Lovable and Cursor, alongside AI providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI, and consumer-focused tools from companies like Wabi. The Gemini web app is available at gemini.google.com.
