How Linux Mint saved an eight-year-old PC
Turn your aging Windows machine into a fast and secure system with Linux.

Recently, I received a call from someone I hadn't met, who was referred by a mutual friend I had previously assisted. "My computer isn't receiving security updates anymore," he explained, "and a technician from my internet provider suspects a virus. Can you help?"
I inquired about the computer's age. "Eight years," he replied, "running Windows 10." This instantly clarified the situation. With Windows 10 reaching its end-of-life, there was no straightforward path for continued security. So, I posed a crucial question: "Are you open to considering an alternative approach?"
A Perfect Candidate for Linux Mint
We later met at the village library after my Meals on Wheels shift. He brought a Dell Inspiron 15, equipped with a 935-gigabyte hard drive, an i5 CPU, and 8 gigabytes of RAM – quite robust hardware for its age. I informed him that it was an ideal candidate for Linux Mint Cinnamon.
I inserted a USB drive, rebooted the machine, and pressed F12 to access the Dell boot menu. Once the live desktop environment loaded, I guided him through the basics, demonstrating how user-friendly and familiar Linux Mint can feel. His drive was encrypted, so prior to installation, I prepared it for a clean start.
Wiping the Drive and Installing Linux Mint
First, I inspected the device layout using the command:
$ lsblk
This command lists all block devices and partitions, ensuring I targeted the correct disk. Once verified, I securely wiped the drive with:
$ shred -v -n 3 /dev/sda
While the wipe was in progress, I took my lunch break. Upon completion, I booted again from the USB drive and launched the Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.2 "Zara" installer. In approximately ten minutes, this eight-year-old laptop was running a fast, secure, and brand-new operating system.
At our follow-up meeting at the library, after a hands-on introduction to his newly upgraded laptop, he was absolutely thrilled.
Breathing New Life into Old Computers with Linux
Just like that, an aging laptop found a renewed purpose, and its owner discovered a fresh, more secure digital path forward. What began as an unexpected call blossomed into a moment of trust, problem-solving, and community engagement.
By switching to Linux Mint, we didn't just extend the life of his device. We provided him with a secure, modern operating system, free from the limitations of proprietary software. Our next meeting won't merely teach him a new interface; it will empower him to reclaim confidence and digital independence.
