Scaling High-Demand Platforms with Laravel: An Engineer's Journey
Explore Gulzar Ahmed's journey from freelance developer to CTO of Hyperzod, where he leverages Laravel and the TALL stack to build high-scale, on-demand delivery platforms. Discover his insights on technical leadership and problem-solving.
With over a decade in software development, Gulzar Ahmed began his career as a freelance full-stack PHP developer in 2012. His unique blend of creativity and engineering expertise naturally drew him toward product development. He expresses, “Software became the perfect medium for me to bring ideas to life, and I genuinely love the challenge of solving complex technical problems.”
In 2020, Gulzar assumed the role of CTO at Hyperzod, transitioning into technical leadership. This shift involved designing entire product ecosystems rather than developing isolated features. He now oversees engineering, hiring, technical architecture, and strategic direction for the company, embracing the significant responsibilities that come with the role.
Building Hyperzod for the Quick Ecommerce Era with Laravel
Gulzar's introduction to Laravel came in 2015 through a recommendation. Having previously worked with CakePHP, CodeIgniter, and Yii, he found Laravel to be modern and exceptionally expressive. Initially intimidated by the Artisan CLI, he quickly mastered it and has since made Laravel his primary development framework. Today, he builds extensively using Laravel and the TALL stack (Tailwind, Alpine.js, Laravel, Livewire), augmented by first-party ecosystem tools such as Octane, Pint, and Sail.
Hyperzod, Gulzar’s main focus, is a platform that empowers on-demand delivery businesses operating within the rapid-paced ecommerce sector. It provides comprehensive admin dashboards and applications for customers, merchants, and delivery fleets. The platform seamlessly integrates payments, POS systems, marketing tools, operations, and logistics. Additionally, his team developed Autozod, an AI-powered solution for managing delivery fleets.
Under Gulzar’s leadership, Hyperzod operates over 50 microservices, all built entirely with Laravel. These services efficiently process thousands of daily orders and millions of API calls each month, underscoring Laravel’s foundational role in the entire system. Concurrently, Gulzar is also developing Spot Salary, an AI-powered salary search engine.
Advocating and Contributing to the Community
Gulzar actively participates in the online Laravel community, sharing insights and tips on X and LinkedIn. He emphasizes, “More significantly, I have invested time in mentoring many developers, helping them successfully navigate their journeys into Laravel development.” His direct contributions include fixing an issue in the Laravel Scout Typesense adapter, culminating in a successful pull request to the framework’s repository.
Advice for Developers
Gulzar asserts that effective software goes beyond just clean code. His advice to developers is to “move beyond just writing code and focus on understanding the business problems. I have met many talented coders, but far fewer true problem-solvers who can architect smart, scalable solutions that drive actual value.”
