Should you pursue a certification? The answer often isn't straightforward, but this guide will help you make the right decision for your career goals.

A colleague recently asked me for advice on pursuing an AWS certification. The insights I'm sharing in this guide summarize the recommendation I provided, offering first-hand advice tailored to what you genuinely aim to achieve.

This guide provides a clear framework to help you determine whether the certification you're considering is truly necessary or if another approach might better suit your aspirations.

However, I opted not to take the certification exam. My primary objective was to acquire knowledge, not merely a certificate. My decade of experience working with Kubernetes has proven instrumental in achieving my professional aspirations.

Here's the crucial takeaway from today's discussion:

• If your ambition is to become an expert, dedicate yourself to continuous learning and daily practical application.
• If a certification offers a tangible career benefit, such as a promotion or a specific job role, then pursuing it is a sound decision.

Therefore, ask yourself this fundamental question: What do I truly want to achieve? From this perspective, I present two distinct paths.

The Expert Path

If you're passionate about technology and aspire to become an expert, here's an important insight: you don't necessarily need to pass a certification exam to achieve mastery. What you truly need is:

• Knowledge
• Practice

Ideally, these two elements should be pursued in parallel. You can acquire knowledge through:

• Official or unofficial training courses.
• Technical mentorship from experienced peers.
• Consistent daily work with the technology.

The most proficient AWS and Kubernetes experts I've encountered in my career dedicated 2 to 3 years to daily, hands-on work with their respective technologies. Were you expecting something more complex?

A certification provides a credential that positions you as an expert in a particular field, allowing others to recognize your presumed proficiency. Consequently, your performance will be judged against the level of expertise implied by that credential.

It's crucial to understand that preparing for a certification exam isn't solely about deep technological knowledge. While you will certainly learn aspects of the technology through official and unofficial training, the primary focus for exam preparation is practicing with real exam scenarios. This distinction is vital: if your goal is certification, your efforts should center on mastering exam techniques. While certification preparation does impart knowledge, it often prioritizes passing the exam over achieving true, comprehensive expertise.
