Visual Studio 2026 is Now Generally Available: A New Era for Developers
Visual Studio 2026 is now generally available! Experience unparalleled performance, a redesigned UI, and AI-native capabilities for a faster, smarter, and seamless development journey.
Dear developers,
We’re thrilled to announce the general availability of Visual Studio 2026! This milestone has been achieved side-by-side with your invaluable contributions. Your feedback has been more instrumental in shaping this release than any before. Since the introduction of the Insiders Channel in September, Visual Studio 2026 has seen more downloads and tests from developers than any previous preview in Visual Studio’s history.
In the year leading up to this release, we've diligently addressed over 5,000 of your reported bugs and implemented 300 feature requests. This represents our most significant effort to date, and we're just getting started!
With substantial performance enhancements, a thoroughly redesigned user experience, and a major leap forward in AI-driven development, this release is meticulously crafted to help developers focus on their core mission: creation. Every click, keystroke, and compile is now smoother, faster, and more intuitive, empowering you to transform ideas into code with unprecedented speed.
You know that frustrating feeling when lag disrupts your flow? We've worked tirelessly to make that a relic of the past.
Blazing-Fast Performance
Visual Studio 2026 offers blazing-fast performance, ensuring significantly snappier startup times and a UI that responds so smoothly you'll barely notice it's there. We've cut hangs by over 50%, giving the IDE a lightweight, effortless feel, even on massive projects. Whether you're managing enterprise-scale repositories or tinkering with smaller codebases, this release sets a new benchmark for productivity.
Figure 1: Illustrates faster load times to interactive for large .NET solutions compared to VS 2022.
Beyond just faster solution loading, the UI maintains greater responsiveness even while items are loading. In fact, those annoying UI freezes have been reduced by more than half.
Figure 2: Shows that the amount of time the UI is unresponsive on large solution loads is less than half of what it was in VS 2022.
While statistics are impressive, what truly matters is the tangible feel of using the IDE. It simply runs considerably faster, smoother, and more responsively—a difference that isn't always captured by numbers alone.
“Wow! I just opened a solution with over 100 projects, and I can’t believe how fast it came up and was ready! Well done, Visual Studio team!”
– Steve Smith, Principal Software Architect, NimblePros
AI-Native: The World's First Intelligent Developer Environment
Visual Studio 2026 is AI-native, making it the world's first Intelligent Developer Environment (IDE). This isn't about altering your workflow; it's about providing intelligence precisely when you need it most. Whether you're debugging a complex issue, profiling performance, or modernizing an application, AI seamlessly steps in to eliminate friction and surface insights, helping you move faster without disrupting your flow. It's designed to enhance the practices you already trust, not replace them.
This release also introduces new C# and C++ agents, meticulously crafted for professional developers who demand precision and speed daily. These capabilities extend what you can achieve without adding complexity, ensuring you remain in control while accomplishing more in less time. Visual Studio 2026 leverages AI not for its own sake, but as a natural evolution of the tools you rely on to get the job done, significantly boosting your productivity.
This evolution unlocks possibilities that once seemed out of reach, integrating AI organically into your daily workflow. GitHub Copilot has rapidly become one of the most frequently used features in Visual Studio, earning widespread acclaim from developers who depend on it every day.
“The Profiler Agent in Visual Studio immediately highlighted the bottlenecks and guided me to faster, cleaner performance – like having a built-in performance coach.”
– Roberto Perez, Senior Global Solutions Architect, Redis
Perfecting the Essentials: A Redesigned Experience
When you're using Visual Studio all day, every interaction counts. We've redoubled our efforts on perfecting the essentials—eliminating friction, fixing those subtle “paper cuts,” and refining your workflow. This release introduces a flexible new settings system, a beautifully modern UI redesign, and hundreds of under-the-hood improvements that elevate the IDE experience in every aspect.

Over the past 12 months, your invaluable feedback has enabled us to fix more than 5,000 bugs and incorporate over 300 feature requests. This marks our biggest push leading up to a major Visual Studio release yet, and the momentum continues to grow. With AI-driven tools accelerating how we identify and resolve issues, we are delivering improvements faster than ever before.
“What I love most about Visual Studio 2026 is the performance and the fresh and crisp UI – and support for Mermaid diagrams is the icing on the cake.”
– Erik Ejlskov Jensen, Context& A/S
Seamless Compatibility and Decoupled Build Tools
Here’s the best part: Visual Studio 2026 is fully compatible with your projects and extensions from Visual Studio 2022. Simply open your existing solutions and resume coding immediately. No migration steps, no surprises. All your favorite extensions are also available, ensuring your workspace, tools, and projects transition seamlessly, making the IDE feel like home from the very first launch.
The over 4,000 extensions compatible with Visual Studio 2022 today are also fully functional with Visual Studio 2026. You can upgrade with complete peace of mind, confident that your setup will remain as stable and familiar as ever.
“Getting the extensions from Visual Studio 2022 was a definitive plus: I was ready to use VS 2026 immediately”
– Didier Donner, Principal Software Engineer, Aspen Technology
Furthermore, with GitHub Copilot, application modernization and upgrades to .NET 10 and the latest C++ build tools are accelerated and guided with expert assistance. This ensures you're ready to fully leverage all the latest performance enhancements and features. GitHub Copilot’s new C++ capabilities are available now in Private Preview.
Historically, updating Visual Studio often meant you also had to upgrade your .NET and C++ build tools, as these were tightly coupled with the IDE. This frequently presented challenges; while you desired the latest features and bug fixes, the update could potentially disrupt existing projects or force toolchain changes you weren't prepared for.
Visual Studio 2026 revolutionizes this approach. The IDE is now decoupled from its build tools, allowing you to update Visual Studio itself at any time without affecting your .NET or C++ compilers. Even better, you’ll receive automatic monthly updates with fresh features, design refinements, and productivity boosts delivered directly to your IDE, all while keeping your toolchains stable for as long as you require.
