Windsurf x Metalab: Building a New Brand for the Future of AI Coding
Metalab partnered with Windsurf to create a distinctive brand for their AI coding tool, leading to a significant $2.4 billion acquisition by Google and Cognition. Discover the design journey.
Codieum, an AI-powered developer tool, was rapidly gaining traction and charting its own course in a competitive market, yet it lacked a defined brand identity. The team, after a naming exercise, settled on Windsurf and approached Metalab with a clear objective: to be reimagined.
Metalab embarked on a mission to craft a flexible brand system designed to scale across Windsurf's marketing site, product, and beyond. The aim was to create a system that not only showcased the product's capabilities but also evoked an emotional connection.

Setting the Scene
Inspired by the dynamic forces of wind and waves, the guiding principle for the brand was limitless flow. This concept represents the point where creative blocks dissipate, innovation sparks, and deep work becomes effortless. Windsurf sought a brand that would disrupt the market, not merely fit in.
The vision was to develop an expressive system, practical for real-world application, and undeniably Windsurf. One that channeled energy, clarity, and joy into every interaction point. Metalab leaned into bold gestures and emotional resonance, shaping a brand that feels alive in a field often perceived as safe, technical, and uniform.
The Journey
-
Taking Risks Over Staying Safe While most AI brands adhere to conventional aesthetics, Windsurf opted for an unexpected approach. This spirit, encapsulated by their lead designer's sentiment, "We’d rather take risks and go for it than settle for where we are," set the foundation for the subsequent design process.
-
Building the Metaphor The concept of 'flow' needed to be tangible, not just visual. Metalab drew inspiration from the dynamism of waves and wind. The resulting design system pulsates with fluid gradients, precise typography, and motion that harmonizes technicality with human intuition, blurring the lines between product and emotion.
-
Stretching the System Across Touchpoints The brand was envisioned to be a living entity, extending beyond online presence.
- On-product UI felt grounded and intuitive, striking a balance between trust and efficiency.
- Marketing and events embraced dramatic wave visuals and vibrant color palettes.
- Community-facing assets, from animated narratives to developer merchandise, resonated as a movement rather than just a brand.
Metalab even explored the brand's potential integration into the product itself. While conceptual and early-stage, these explorations hinted at the shape of future user experiences.

Breaking Down the Visual Language
-
Logo The logo serves as the brand's primary identifier, encapsulating its essence in a single mark. A stylized "W," formed by the motion of waves, reflects the elegance of natural movement and the seamless flow developers experience when fully immersed in their tools. Its dynamic curves symbolize adaptability and continuous progress, always in motion.
-
Color Palette The color palette draws inspiration from nature and the exhilarating energy of windsurfing – sunsets, surf, and coastal light. Grounded neutrals establish a serene foundation, complemented by neon accents that introduce sharp bursts of energy. This contrast mirrors the Windsurf experience: smooth, deliberate, and occasionally electric.
-
Iconography Crafted with mono-line forms and dashed details, each icon coherently echoes the broader system's logic, creating a visual language that is clear, unified, and intentionally dynamic.
-
Typeface The chosen typeface, Tomato Grotesk, paired with DM Sans and DM Mono, strikes a balance between distinctive personality and precise clarity.
-
Wave Centered around a compelling wave motif, the system captures both harnessed power and human potential, embodying the 'flow' that Windsurf enables.
The Result
The new brand not only differentiates Windsurf but also delivers significant impact. It deliberately diverges from the expected aesthetic for an AI developer tool, which was precisely the intention.
Windsurf now projects a unique, vibrant, and authentic identity. It's a brand designed to unlock creativity, going beyond merely demonstrating product functionality.
Just months after the rebrand launch, Windsurf was acquired by Google for $2.4 billion, and subsequently by Cognition. This outcome stands as a powerful testament to the synergy achieved when brand and product move in perfect flow together.
